I am doing a truck activity study and I am interested in downloading summary information such as fuel use, miles traveled, speed distributions and similar data from Detroit Diesel, Cummins and Caterpillar engines from a broad range of model years. What is the minimum software and hardware I need to do this? I believe I need Detroit Diesel Diagnostic Link, INSITE and Caterpillar Electronic Technician software, but am not sure which versions. Do the latest versions handle all model years or do I need several versions of the software? Can I get away with the basic versions? Is any of the hardware (cables, connectors, interfaces, etc.) the same between the three sets of software or do I have to buy these seperate for each manufacturer?

Also, if I am only interested in summary data, can I avoid the license requirement for any of the sotware? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
