I've only tried windows 10 & 7, both 64 bit. Windows 7 worked with all my flash drives. But the application will not find your USB stick on windows 10. Unzip the TP HMD. Use 'usbfmtpw.exe' to make a bootable HMD USB. If it says 'Error: Drive not found to format', then it's very likely it can't run on your OS (Windows 10 for instance).

The numbers are shown in the BIOS (the Machine Type and Serial Number show 'INVALID', but other numbers are there). However, there is no option in the BIOS to change the numbers. I was able to obtain a Hardware Maintenance Diskette image for the Think branded Lenovo's (IBM's?), which is only supposed to be available to repair facilities.

Otherwise, you will see a format window. Make sure it's your flash drive. Don't worry about the size. You can always format it in windows, and the flash drive will turn back to normal. Boot your Thinkpad with the USB stick you just made.

You might need to hit 'F12' to open the boot options to choose it. You will see a blue screen with some descriptions of the tool. Choose option 1, '1. ' or something like that.

I can't remember now, but it's pretty straightforward once you are at this step. Follow the instructions. It's pretty easy.

Hi Rider and OtheHill, You are the first guys to show me this possibility.Lenovo techs never mentioned it, and other online 'specialists' also agreed that the Lenovo board was a disaster My loss of $160.00 On the plus side, the machine is up and running like a plane falling from the sky, and I have deceided to live with the error message in bios.adds ten seconds to bootup.what the heck!! Thanks guys for your help.really appreciated from all in the forum. And I've learned heaps (a real bonus).and am happy to live with the result and consider the case closed As a last comment.I really regret the demise of the desktop (tower) computers that you could really get into and work on and fix Laptops, tablets and I thingys are throwaways.they work till they stop.then you bin them and buy another What a waste!
