Dynamics AX 2009 - Demo Data Released Recently, on July 7th, Microsoft released the Demo Data set for Dynamics AX 2009. This is a totally new dataset, much more complete and all spanning that the famous Global Trade and Manufacturing Company that everyone knows and loves. Demo Company Overview The Demo Data set for Microsoft Dynamics® AX 2009 is no longer based on the Global Trade and Manufacturing Company. Based on market feedback we have created a new Contoso Entertainment systems group of companies.
It comes with 2 fiscal years of transactional data that enable us to demo our stronger Business Intelligence story and Role Center pages, while allowing us to easily expand the demo data story in future releases as we expand Microsoft Dynamics® AX’s functionality footprint. Contoso Entertainment Systems (CES) is a home electronics manufacturing, distribution and retail company that includes a Professional Services department. Its headquarters are in the USA with a key distribution subsidiary based in Germany and it works with the relevant currencies. CES distributes televisions, projectors, Digital Video Recorders and Players, and audio receivers.
It manufactures speakers and assembles home theatre systems. CES’s customers are primarily based in North America and Europe and include Major Accounts (such as hotel chains), Wholesalers (of differing sizes), Retail stores (that are self-owned and operated), as well an internet storefront. The legal and physical structure of CES is setup as follows: CEC – Contoso Entertainment Consolidation, based in USA CEU – Contoso Entertainment USA, Headquarters based in USA o Site 1: Production of all speakers o Site 2: Assembly of home theatre systems and Services o Site 3: Production of Standard speakers CEE – Contoso Entertainment Europe, Distribution subsidiary company based in Germany o Site 4: Distribution, Assembly and Service of all products CVC – Virtual company that includes table collections from CEU and CEE. The downloads for Contoso Entertainment Systems demo data offers transactional data for Basic, Administration, General Ledger, Bank, Fixed Assets, Accounts Payable, Accounts and Receivable, Inventory Management, Intercompany, Production, Master Planning, CRM, Project, Expense Management, and Human Resources modules, and is intended to demonstrate these modules’ functionality. It also offers base data (i.e. No transactions) for the Product Builder modules.

Shutdown the AOS in services. Open SQL Management Studio.
Connect to the SQL Database. Right Click MicrosoftDynamicsAx = Tasks = Restore = Database. Select From Device and then find the downloaded.bak File. On the top left click on 'Options' and check the first box: Overwrite the existing database (With REPLACE). Click OK and repeat for the other DB. For more information on the three partitions contained in the CONTOSO Dataset check the pdf available next to the CONTOSO data download link!
The folowing procedure allowed you to install the first Dataset that Microsoft removed a couple of days later from their website. This procedure can still help you restore the new.bak files if the previous one fails. Shudown the AOS in Services.
Open SQL Server Management Studio. Connect to your Ax Database. Note: Here, you will see there are two bases with the same name as the Contoso.bak ones.
You guessed right, we are going to import them, but you can't do it by just clicking on 'Restore Database' since the.bak file originated from a different database. Here is where a litle bit of coding is required. Backup the two bases.
Click on 'New Query' and input/Execute the following code: Alter Database MicrosoftDynamicsAXmodel SET SINGLEUSER With ROLLBACK IMMEDIATE RESTORE DATABASE MicrosoftDynamicsAXmodel FROM DISK = '%Path to.Bak File% MicrosoftDynamicsAXmodel.bak' WITH REPLACE If this doesn't work because the Database is in use, add the following lane at the top of the query: Use Master Repeat the same query for the MicrosoftDynamicsAX.bak file Once all this is done, your Database should be up to date and the Contoso Data should be imported. You can now restart your AOS. This might take a long time and you might even consider rebooting the server.
Once the server finally starts, open the Ax Client. It should be extremely slow. This is due to the 26 000 Alerts that you should see on the bottom right part of the client. Mark them all as read (again this will take some time) and now the client should run much faster!
You should now have Contoso Data in your Dynamics AX 2012 R2 Installation!
